Standardization requires that the shaft's ends all be uniform; therefore each customer can provide the means for mounting and driving them. However, special NSK ballscrew support bearing units are available to simplify this task. Though standardization limits the scope of types, sizes, and other specifications offered, the units available in NSK's LPR/PR- and R-Series can accommodate many applications. therefore, they should be seriously considered any time a precision linear actuator is required.

For high-speed X-Y Stage machine tools, the ball screw driving mechanism should be provided with measures against heat generation and thermal expansion. For the HMC Series, we recommend forced cooling be used for the shaft center; hollow shaft type is available.

Analyzing problems and finding the right solution is one of Ball screw manufacturer NSK’s specialties. When a medical manufacturer needed to correct inaccuracies they were experiencing on reagent testing machine (liquid handler), they called on NSK. Our engineers determined that placement inaccuracy was caused because machine was using a low-torque motor with high-torque linear guide from a competitor. NSK Engineering advised that a linear guide designed with the ability to handle the low torque motor would solve the problem. Installation of the ball screw:
(1) Centering of the units
Align the centers of housings for the ball nut and support bearing to which a ball screw is fixed. The
centering is critical for life, smooth operation, and positioning accuracy of a ball screw.
We generally recommend the centering accuracy follows for a precision grade ball screw.
• Inclination of center line: 1/2,000 or less
(Target: 1/5,000 or less)
• Eccentricity: 0.020 mm or less

There are two types of lubricating methods – grease and oil – for ballscrew actuator and linear guide usage. Use a lubricant agent and method most suitable to condition requirements and purpose to optimize functions of the ballscrew and linear guide. In general, lubricants with low base oil kinematic viscosity are used for high speed operation. Lubrication with high base oil kinematic viscosity is used for oscillating operations, low speed and high temperature.

Each unit is inspected to determine the cause of failure and what work is needed for a ball screw repair. Each unit is then cleaned, re-balled, straightened, and restored to “like new” appearance, function, and drawing specifications. Additional services include nut and shaft grinding and polishing, the manufacturing of replacement nuts and shafts, drag torque measuring, lead error analysis, and noise testing.

These Ball bearings are designed for motorized and non-motorized spindles and feature the optimal internal structure for minimizing heat generation and improving seizure resistance. The H type can be lubricated with grease at speeds where conventional bearings require Oil-Air lubrication. The BSS Series realizes high-speed operation at a maximum of dN 220,000—outstanding for ball screws and far surpassing the 135,000 dN maximum performance of conventional return tube type products. For high lead ball screws, high-speed

The MCH Monocarrier (linear precision actuator) features super- high rigid rails suitable for cantilever beams and many other factory automation applications. While this hybrid ceramic bearing has the same design as the S and H types, its rings are made of SHX steel, a new steel developed by NSK. SHX has excellent seizure and wear resistance during critical lubrication shortages. Also, its heat resistance is nearly equal to M50 steel, which is widely used in Ball bearings for jet aircraft engines. With the X-Y stage, grease lubrication is feasible at even higher speeds than the H type. In terms of both surface and subsurface fatigue, SHX steel provides longer life.
