operational skills. They also shared impeccable timing, for the market urgently needed a consulting company specializing in the new field of soil mechanics.

Initially, Golder offered services in soil mechanics and foundation engineering. This rapidly expanded to include rock mechanics in the 1970s.

Golder provided the team with geotechnical and geological investigations, geologic hazards evaluation, foundation engineering, rock mechanics and rock slope stabilization, retaining wall systems design, surface water hydrology/stream erosion, blast design and remediation, geophysical surveys and pavement design.

Golder Associates offers a broad range of geophysical services to the aggregate industry. Geophysics can be extremely cost-effective in developing resource and reserve estimates for pit and quarry operations. The survey data is processed by our geophysicists using state of
the art software.
In the 1980s the company developed its groundwater expertise into the broader field of hydrogeology, and in particular, contaminated soil and groundwater.

Environmental issues included investigating wetlands and irrigation return flows for presence of endangered species such as Chinook salmon and steelhead.  Golder delineated wetlands and conducted fish studies (snorkeling and electro-shocking) to determine the presence of fish, while also examining waterfowl breeding, endangered plant species, cultural resources, water quality, and hydrogeology.
Golder has been involved with design and construction implementation of various tunnelled crossings under major rail, highway and waterway corridors. Many of these projects have involved significant geotechnical and construction risk minimisation. These have included the complete evaluation of stability conditions for the approaches to these structures.

Our service areas have grown to accommodate client needs, from specialist services to total project management and turnkey solutions. From our soil science and geotechnical foundations, our expertise has expanded into all aspects of environmental science.

With our stateof-the-art equipment and advanced technologies, we can conduct more than 60 geosynthetic and geotechnical tests — all standardized by the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM). For some materials, ASTM standards have not yet been created. In those situations, we draw on our professional experience to develop testing techniques that can provide you with a comfortable level of quality assurance. When your technical needs go beyond normal lab testing, we can also draw upon the environmental and/or civil geotechnical experience of Golder Associates’ 1,900 professional staff located throughout a worldwide network of offices.
In the late 1990s with the ongoing development of the company's capabilities in water-related fields, hydrology and hydraulic engineering services were added to Golder's repertoire. The new millennium brought skills in geographic information systems, information management and cultural sciences.

Agribusinesses now deal with various governmental regulations, such as clean air (odors and other emissions), clean water (surface and groundwater) and other environmental laws and permitting requirements.  A significant amount of resources are also expended on litigation-related issues.

Golder Associates defines tunnelling excellence as Performance under pressure. This is because that of all underground openings, pressure tunnels provide the greatest design challenges. Failure to understand and address the technical issues of pressure tunnel design often leads to excessive leakage, water loss, slope failures and/or groundwater contamination.

Golder Associates recognizes the increasing complexity of the aggregate industry, and the need to use risk assessment and decision analysis to assist with planning and prediction of future trends within this industry. Golder provides specialty remedial contracting services.  Our in-situ remedial technologies have been deployed at landfills, hazardous waste storage facilities, fuel handling and storage complexes and manufacturing plants. 

At landfills, we construct gas extraction and treatment systems, and leachate and/or groundwater extraction and treatment systems.
