What is scalp seborrheic dermatitis?
Itching, flaking and scaling skin above the hairline can be quite common. In its mildest form it is called dandruff.  But when there is an annoying itch, extreme flaking along with inflamed greasy, scaly-looking skin above the frontal hairline or around the ears, it could be scalp seborrheic dermatitis SSD. Seborrheic dermatitis is a non-contagious skin condition that can range in severity from a light mild rash to severe redness and is often associated with itching and yellow greasy scaliness. It is a stubborn and persistent condition that can cause a great deal of discomfort.

Too much washing and scrubbing with strong facial cleansers will not stop these plugs from forming and in fact may make your acne worse. Any area with acne should be washed with a gentle facial cleanser. After the plug forms, the oil from the gland cannot get out of the pore and bacteria can grow in the plugged gland. This can lead to redness and swelling of the skin around the gland forming a pimple.
Dry skin, which is also called xerosis, is a common dermatologic condition. Most people are bothered by flaky, itchy, tight skin at some point in their lives. Children itch because of the dry skin associated with atopic dermatitis. Dry skin is practically universal in people older than 60. Some people have a genetic predisposition to dry skin.

Topical corticosteroids can be absorbed from normal intact skin. increase percutaneous absorption. Once absorbed through the skin, topical corticosteroids are handled through the same metabolic and elimination pathways as after systemic administration.

Rosacea generally occurs in patients between the ages of 25 and with fair complexions. Women are more likely than men to have rosacea, although the disease is generally more severe in men. Rosacea is chronic, persisting for years with periods of exacerbation and remission.

METROGEL and METROCREAM metronidazole topical preparations are particularly effective against the mechanisms by which topical metronidazole acts in reducing inflammatory lesions of rosacea are unknown, but may include an anti-bacterial and/or an anti-inflammatory effect.


Seborrheic Dermatitis - Overview
What is scalp seborrheic dermatitis?
Itching, flaking and scaling skin above the hairline can be quite common. In its mildest form it is called dandruff.
But when there is an annoying itch, extreme flaking along with inflamed greasy, scaly-looking skin above the frontal hairline or around the ears, it could be scalp seborrheic dermatitis SSD.

Seborrheic dermatitis usually affects the scalp but can also occur on other parts of the face and body such as the nose, eyelids, ears, and navel as well as skin folds under the arms, breasts, groin and buttocks.

A predisposition to rosacea or "prerosacea" may be identified in the teens and twenties. The patient may have a family history of rosacea, easily blush, and frequently develop transient redness and/or burning and stinging in response to topical anti-acne medications or over-the-counter skin care products, such as sunscreens, astringents, cleansers, perfumes, colognes or after-shave preparations. Without treatment, prerosacea early rosacea progresses through the three stages of rosacea and eventually may lead to severe facial disfigurement.

DESCRIPTION: SANS-ACNE erythromycin and ethyl alcohol topical solution is indicated for the treatment of acne. DIRECTIONS: First wash and dry areas affected by acne, then apply SANS-ACNE solution twice daily to these areas.

Use DIFFERIN once a day at night before you go to bed. You should first wash your face with a gentle facial cleanser and blot it dry with a soft towel -- do not rub your face. Then apply a thin film of DIFFERIN to the areas where you have acne.
Others develop cracked, dry skin because of systemic or cutaneous disease, hostile environmental conditions, systemic or topical medications, or exposure to harsh soaps and detergents. One important source of moisture is transepidermal water. Transepidermal water is the moisture that migrates upward from deeper dermal tissues to the epidermis, where it hydrates adds water to the stratum corneum and then evaporates into the atmosphere. This process is called transepidermal water loss TEWL.


Who Gets Seborrheic Dermatitis?
Seborrheic dermatitis affects 3-5% of the general population, occurring more frequently in men than in women. As with rosacea, seborrheic dermatitis most often affects middle-aged individuals or the elderly. However the condition can also be found in infants less than 3 months of age, and is commonly known as age spots.

Before you go out in the sun, use a good sunscreen SPF of non-comedogenic. Avoid using oily makeup or creams, products that make your skin dry or peel, and any products with alcohol. These may make your acne worse.

Stress, fatigue, extreme weather conditions, oily skin, infrequent shampooing or skin cleansing, skin disorders such as acne, obesity, and the use of lotions that contain alcohol have all been found to increase the risk or worsen seborrheic dermatitis. Another cause believed to contribute to outbreaks of seborrheic dermatitis is related to an increase in the numbers of a fungus called Pityrosporum ovale normally present in the skin. The incidence and severity of the condition may also be influenced by a combination of genetic or hormonal factors which might explain why it can appear in infancy and disappear before puberty.
