AUTOTRANSFORMER

An autotransformer is a type of transformer that has the primary
winding employed as a secondary winding, or vice versa; This process is
also named a compensator or balancing coil. An autotransformer is a
simple and inexpensive way to correct problems that arise when a
secondary voltage is difficult to obtain or a transformer you have is
either too high or too low.

A transformer that has a part of its winding included in both the input
and output circuit is known as an autotransformer. In a simple
autotransformer connection there is a common portion of the winding
that has no isolation between the input and output circuits, and there
is only one winding.

The secondary current rating of an autotransformer must be at least equal to the primary current rating of the subject transformer.  In simple terms, a subject transformer with a primary current draw of 5 amps should be used with an autotransformer with a secondary current rating of 5 amps or more.

A 3 phase transformer is found in most large power - and small -
transformer installations which provide all 3 phases. Sometimes they do so with three single-phase unit, sometimes with one 3 phase transformer unit. In either case, there are six windings, three on the primary and three on the secondary side.

A transformer is a device used in an electrical circuit that changes a
voltage on the primary winding to another voltage level on the
secondary winding(s). This transformation is accomplished via a mutual
coupling effect between the primary winding and secondary winding(s),
with the magnitude of change determined by the turns ratio between the
windings. If the primary winding contains more turns than the secondary
winding, then the voltage induced in that secondary winding will be
decreased by an amount equal to the turns ratio between the primary &
secondary winding, a transformer that does this is referred to as a
step down Transformer. Whereas in a transformer that has a primary
winding with less turns than the secondary, then the voltage induced in
the secondary winding is increased by an equal amount to the turns
ratio, this device is called a Step Up Transformer.

Impedance, (Z) is a measure for the manner and degree a component
resists the flow of electrical current if a given voltage is applied.
It is denoted by the symbol Z and is measured in ohms. Impedance
differs from simple resistance in that it takes into possible phase
offset. For a magnetics component impedance is comprised of the copper
loses due to the resistance of the magnet wire and the inductive
reactance losses associated with the changing magnetics and electric
field losses. The summation of these resistive and reactive loss
components are performed with vector addition.

The permeability of a magnetic material about a specified operating
point and applied magnetics field strength, especially under DC bias
conditions. The incremental permeability is expressed as the slope of
the B-H characteristic about the given operating point (dB/dH).

Isolation transformers are transformers with a one to one turns ratio,
where one side is connected to the source and the other to the load.
Used to prevent any DC bias levels present on the source from passing
through to the load. Isolation transformers can carry high
frequency noise on the input primary to the output secondary windings
so they are typically designed to minimize this capacitive coupling.

Coupling is a measure of the amount of interconnecting flux lines
between two windings of a magnetic component or two magnetic
components. For a current transformer the designer maximizes coupling
between the windings by placing the windings on the same core and
through various winding techniques. For individual inductors a
magnetic shield is often placed over the windings to prevent flux lines
from radiating from the winding and interfering with other components.

Custom transformers are devices made to your specifications and employed in an electrical circuit that changes a voltage on the primary winding to a different voltage level on the secondary winding(s).
This change is made through a reciprocal coupling effect between the primary winding and secondary winding(s), with the magnitude of alteration determined by the ratio of turns between the windings.
If the primary winding has greater turns than the secondary winding, then the voltage induced in that secondary winding will be decreased by an amount equal to the turns ratio between the primary & secondary winding. A custom transformer that does this is referred to as a Step Down Transformer. Whereas in custom transformers that has a primary winding with less turns than the secondary, then the voltage induced in the secondary winding is increased by an equal amount to the turns ratio, this device is called a Step Up Transformer.

The flyback circuit utilizes the "flyback" action of an inductor or
flyback transformer to convert the input voltage and current to the
desired output voltage and current. A modern flyback transformer and
circuit design can now permit use in excess of 300 watts of power, but
most applications are less than 50 watts. A flyback transformer first
saves energy received from the input power supply (charging portion of
a cycle) and then transfers energy (discharge portion of a cycle) to
the output, usually a storage capacitor with a load connected across
its terminals. A modern flyback transformer is operated at high
frequency hence gapped ferrite core materials are typically used.

You can find a flyback transformer in all sorts of screens and monitors
which require a cathode ray tube (CRT) including television screens and
computer monitors. The flyback transformer has many purposes - the
creation of the acceleration voltage for the CRT (typically 20-30kV),
and of many auxiliary voltages.

A power transformer normally operates from either 60 Hz, or 400 Hz
alternating current. Each tiny domain must realign itself twice during
each cycle, or a total of 120 times a second when 60 Hz alternating
current is used. The energy used to turn each domain is dissipated as
heat within the iron core. This loss, called HYSTERESIS LOSS, can be
thought of as resulting from molecular friction. Hysteresis loss can be
held to a small value by proper choice of core materials.

A toroidal transformer is known to be one the highest performing
transformer. A toroidal transformer has the smallest size (by volume
and weight), inferior leakage inductance, and an electromagnetic
interference (EMI) that is much lower. The use of a toroidal
transformer is good for any transformer application that can
accommodate its shape. Although usable, a toroidal transformer are not
always practical for some applications.

Within a magnetic component for electrical components such as a voltage
transformer there is a capacitive effect that occurs between turns,
between layers, between windings (if there is more than one), between
winding and core and between winding and encapsulant. This os what is
known as distributed Capacitance (Cd).
